About the Church
Mugginton Church is Grade 1 listed, and dates at least as far back as Domesday Book (1086) with possibly some Saxon elements remaining. Major restorations were undertaken in 1973 (3 roof beams), in 1987 (the 4 bells removed from a rotting wooden frame, augmented to 6 and returned to a metal frame built by a parishioner).
The church makes use of the Village Hall building as a parish hall. Visitors to the church appreciate that this architectural gem is always kept open, and entries in the visitors’ book reflect how it serves as a sanctuary for those in need of spiritual consolation. The Halter-Devil Chapel is a tiny building annexed to a working farm. It was built in 1723, the legend being that it was intended as a sign of the reformation of a notoriously dissolute individual following an unexpected encounter with the Devil. This chapel, formerly only in use at Easter, Harvest Festival time and Christmas, came regularly into use when Mugginton Church was closed for restoration. It proved so popular that it is now used regularly once a month.
About the village
The church serves a mixed rural community of farmers, commuters and a number of retired people. According to the Local Authority electoral roll, the population of the parish is about 490, mostly living in private accommodation. There is a very limited amount of council and other rented housing. Six new houses have recently been built on the site of the farm opposite the church. There is now only one firm in the area with quarrying interests. The concrete company has now ceased manufacturing and now only has offices. Employment is sought mostly outside the parish. There is a Church of England primary school in Mugginton providing an education rated as good or excellent to local children. The school has recently adopted an extended school day providing care from 8.00 am to 4.30 pm.
